2008-2009 Try-Out Policy

One of the primary objectives of Oshawa Minor Hockey is to encourage players to compete at the appropriate level of competition to maximize their development both as players and individuals. This objective enables the association and its members to put forth competitive teams for all levels of play.

In addition, it is the responsibility of Oshawa Minor and its members to meet level of play requirements in accordance with the OMHA guidelines. These guidelines include that an Association may not enter a team in a lower level of play if there is no team entered in the immediate level above.  For example, Oshawa Minor must enter an “A” team if it wishes to enter an “AE” team or a “AA” team to enter an “A” team. This stipulation applies to all levels and ages in the Rep system.

We recognize that the decision to play at a certain level is a family decision and that the overall well being of the player is the priority.  However, please keep in mind that playing at a level below the player’s true skill level denies your child and the teams their best chance to succeed and advance. Therefore, in an effort to balance your decision with the objectives of Oshawa Minor and the OMHA guidelines, we have revised the 2008/2009 Tryout Policy for all age categories and levels of play below.

  1. Players must attend all of the tryout sessions for the team they wish to play for. Absences for extenuating circumstances (i.e. illness, injury, etc.) can be permitted at the discretion of the coach.

  2. It is highly desirable that all players (new and returning) tryout at the highest level play (AAA).

  3. It is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED for all players to attend, within their appropriate age category, a minimum of TWO TRYOUTS at least one level of play higher than the level of play in their just completed season. For example, returning players at the “A” level for the just ended season should attend the “AA” or the “AAA” tryouts for the upcoming season.  If it is not your intent not to tryout at one level above your recently completed season we would appreciate your feedback and ask that you state your reason on the application form. You may be contacted by Oshawa Minor to further discuss your decision. Please be assured that your comments will help us determine how to improve our system and will only be shared with the Coach, Convener and Rep Chair.

  4. At a minimum, a player MUST tryout at the same level of play within your appropriate age category based on the season just completed. For example, if you played at the “AA” level of play, you must attend the “AA” tryouts for your age category. If it is your intent NOT to tryout at the same level of play as your just completed season (i.e. currently AAA, but wish to tryout at AA), then please indicate on your application the reasons for your decision. You may be contacted by Oshawa Minor to further discuss your decision. Please be assured that your comments will help us determine how to improve our system and will only be shared with the Coach, Convener and Rep Chair.

  5. VOLUNTARY WITHDRAWAL. If at any time after attending a minimum of two tryouts a player wishes to voluntarily withdraw from tryouts prior to completion, we ask that a parent/guardian of that player and the player speak to the Coach, Convener or Rep Chair prior to leaving the tryout process.

  6. As always, please consult the conveners for the appropriate category or the Rep Team Chair for any clarification of this policy.

President

OSHAWA MINOR MIDGET ‘A’ – WIN LAKESHORE CHAMPIONSHIP

Minor Midget A Champs

The Oshawa Minor Midget ‘A’ team captured the Lakeshore Championship March 30th, against the Ajax Knights. After dropping game 1 in this best of 5, 2-1, Oshawa won game 2, 4-1. Game 3 resulted in a 1-1 tie. Oshawa then went on to win games 4 and 5, by scores of 3-1 and 5-1, to finish off the season. Scoring in game 5 were Mike Vermeulen, Josh Turpin, Josh Bossy and Christian Conforti with 2. Assists were by Colin Myles, Mike Vermeulen, Taylor Upshaw, Brandon Thornton and with 2 helpers each Liam Cox and Chris Madore. Stephanie Nehring played a solid game in net, taking away any chances Ajax might have had.In previous playoff matches, Oshawa knocked out Clarington in 4 games. The second round vs Belleville resulted in needing a 6th game to decide the best of 5. The teams split the first 4 games, and tied game 5. Oshawa went on to win a very tough game 6 at the Belleville Memorial arena by a 3-2 score.

Round 3 vs Cobourg, proved to be another very tough opponent, with Oshawa taking game 1, 6-4. In game 2 of this OMHA series, Oshawa ran into penalty trouble late in the game, allowing Cobourg to tie the game, and eventually win 4-3 in O/T. Cobourg then won Game 3, 4-2. But penalty problems continued to hamper Oshawa’s chances as Cobourg tied game 4, 2-2. In a tough fought game 5, Oshawa eventually succumbed 3-1 against Cobourg, relegating Oshawa to the Lakeshore playoff round.

The Lakeshore Championship capped a very successful year for this group of players, who went 19-2-3  in league play this season. They were also finalists in the Cobourg Silver Stick over the Christmas break.

Their success was based on team play, as set out by a terrific staff made up of head coach Darin Whalen, asst coaches Steve Sidey and Kevin Harding, trainer Ewan Robertson, and manager Debbie Turpin. Rounding out the kids support this season were the parents, who were second to none.

Shown in the championship picture are:
Front row: Stephanie Nehring and Darryl Sobanski
Middle row: Tyler Sloan, Josh Bossy, Matt Schmidt, Brandon Thornton, Christian Conforti, Chris Madore, Desmond Rose
Back row: Debbie Turpin, Darin Whalen, Steve Sidey, Rob Campbell, Ryland Scott, Liam Cox (behind), Taylor Upshaw, Mike Vermulean, Josh Turpin (behind), Colin Myles, Dean Hooper, Dylan Rose, Kevin Harding, Ewan Robertson

The staff, and parents, of the Minor Midget ‘A’ team, would like to thank the support of ‘AP’ players this playoff season, Josh Bossy, Matt Schmidt and Darryl Sobanski.

Oshawa’s Oakwood Contracting Atom AAA Sweep Peterborough to take ETA Hockey Championship!

Oakwood AAA Champs!

Before a packed crowd at the Campus Ice Centre Oshawa’s Oakwood Contracting Atom AAA defeated Peterborough by a score of 4 - 1 to take the series and win the Eastern AAA Atom Championship.Oshawa coach Greg Latin stated, “Peterborough is one tough hockey club and were last year’s champions. Our boys came together and worked like a fine tuned machine!”In order to get to the finals Oshawa had to defeat two other talented teams from Markham and Barrie.  In the Barrie series Oshawa was defeated in the opening game, but fought back with two exciting sudden death overtime victories. Oshawa trainer Steve Baker mentioned, “The team trained hard all year and peaked when it was needed most, in the championship series!”Assistant Coach Steve Skene pointed out, “We thought the final game in Barrie wasn’t going to go to our advantage. In addition to the long drive to the game, the team had to wait fully-dressed for an hour watching two overtime periods of the previous game!”We went undefeated in a North Carolina tournament earlier in the season but that was nothing compared to seeing the smiles on the players, parents and fans alike,” stated assistant coach Derrick McCullough.
