HARMAN PARK ARENA SAVED
At a Special Meeting on January 19 City Council received a consultant’s presentation that indicated we have over 2 pads of surplus ice in Oshawa. A number of arena users groups made presentations to City Council regarding the impact of closing the arena. All of our presentations disputed the findings of the consultant’s study and the alleged costs of maintaining the arena. The presentation on behalf of Oshawa Minor Hockey was made by our President Bob Crystal. A copy of his power point presentation and speaking notes can be accessed by using the links below:

Coach Mentor System for 2011 – 2012
The Coach Mentor Committee has revamped the coach mentor system for this season to provide a more intense focus on the younger teams and on the preparation for practices with the intent of achieving a consistent and effective approach to building team skills in preparation for games.
The mentor committee spent many hours interviewing and selecting coaches for our teams and we are proud of them and their staff. We are implementing this program to provide the opportunity for all to improve and rise to the highest level of coaching skill that they can. Just as junior coaches can learn from their senior partners we look at this process as providing the most experienced and knowledgeable hockey people available to offer advice and guidance to all of the coaches in our system. As we progress through the season some teams will need and get additional attention and the program will undergo an assessment in December to determine future focus.
The new program will involve on ice evaluations at practices by the mentor assigned to the team. The mentors will provide evaluations of each practice based on set criteria and on discussions with the coaching staff.
Each mentor has been assigned eight teams to focus on. There are three mentors in our system for this year and each has agreed to and endorsed the new format.
The mentors and their assignments are as follows:
Louie Atkinson – Novice and Minor Atom AE-A–AA-AAA.
Don Howse – Atom and Minor Peewee AE-A–AA-AAA.
Todd Savory – Peewee and Minor Bantam AE-A–AA-AAA.
The three mentors are also available on request to the Bantams and Midgets in all divisions. With the older divisions it is anticipated that a coach could ask for a mentor to attend a practice to assist in building team tactics or work on specialty teams.
